I start with an idea and determine size and orientation for that idea. I may or may not begin with sketches.

My technique requires that I work on a rigid surface such as a gallery box. They are made with 2” frame covered with ¼”, five ply, birch plywood. To that, I apply an acrylic sculpting medium/modeling paste in various patterns.

I may sketch a chosen composition onto the dry medium and begin to apply color. I use a combination of mediums: watercolors, acrylics, sparkle, metallic acrylics, bronze powders, dry pigments, graphite, and occasionally - metallic leaf or foil.

The final application is a poured on, two part, clear, non-yellowing, epoxy resin with a UV filter. This creates the glass like look. The clear resin emphasizes the three dimensional quality of the piece and enhances the richness of the colors.

I'm big on longevity. I expect my art to last several hundred years without aging - unlike myself.
